Cervical screening (also known as a ‘smear test’), is a test to check the health of the cervix and help prevent cervical cancer.

The screening is offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64, and it’s recommended that this is carried out every 3 years. Attending your routine cervical screening test is an important way to keep track of your cervix’s health.

Through screening tests, we’re able to check for the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) – if it’s found, we’ll check for any abnormal cells that could lead to cervical cancer. The earlier these cells are found, the less chance you have of developing cervical cancer.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A smear test is a screening procedure that checks for abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix, helping to prevent cervical cancer.

The Smear Test procedure is quick and minimally uncomfortable, usually taking less than 10 minutes.

It is generally recommended that women start cervical screening at age 25 and continue every 3–5 years, depending on their age and medical history. Your doctor will provide a personalized screening schedule.

During your test, one of our healthcare professionals will take a sample of cells from the neck of your womb. Although it may feel slightly uncomfortable, the procedure itself doesn’t take long and our amazing team will ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

Your sample will then be sent to a lab and tested for the presence of HPV and, if required, further checks for abnormal cells that could lead to cervical cancer.

Lab tests will come back within 3-5 working days and our team will be in touch to relay this information.

If any abnormal cells are detected, your doctor will advise on the best course of action, which may involve further testing or treatment to remove the abnormal cells.

While some women experience mild discomfort, the procedure is quick, and any discomfort typically lasts just a few seconds.
