Before choosing to have a Vasectomy, it is important to be sure that it is right for you. Whilst reversible under some conditions, successful reversal is not guaranteed and surgery is required in order to perform a reversal. Therefore we require all patients to book in for a consultation appointment initially, to allow the patient to fully understand the procedure and consider their options.
Until September 2023 vasectomies were available in Northern Ireland through the HSC (part of the NHS), albeit with an approximate waiting time of around 18 months. Since then however, further NHS funding reductions have seen a dramatic downscaling of Vasectomy services via HSC’s General Practice Elective Care Service. We now expect that few, if any, of Northern Ireland GPs able to offer vasectomies will continue to do so.

This minor surgery carries low risk of complications or side effects. Dr Tayo’s keyhole technique is minimally invasive, making micro-incisions in the skin of your scrotum to reach the tubes, or vas deferens, which are then closed either by being tied or sealed. The puncture closes immediately after the procedure without any need for stitches, no bleeding and only a barely visible scar.
The Vasectomy procedure is extremely quick, painless and straightforward and is carried out under local anaesthetic, which numbs the patient’s scrotum to prevent pain.
The Vasectomy procedure takes about 20-30 minutes to complete, and once performed is a permanent (though sometimes surgically reversible) change.
Recovery from a Vasectomy takes approximately one week, with three days of rest (no heavy lifting or exercise), followed by four days at no more than 70% effort. Patients should experience minimal bruising or swelling.
There should be no long term effects of having a Vasectomy, other than the inability to cause pregnancy. In some cases the procedure can be reversed, but this varies from patient to patient and is not guaranteed.
When you have your Vasectomy, any sperm that were in position to be ejaculated could live for many weeks, meaning that during that time you could still ejaculate them and cause a pregnancy.
As such, you’ll need to avoid sexual activity for at least 7 days after the procedure, and you’ll need to use another method of contraception for at least the first 8 to 12 weeks post-op. After this time any remaining sperm in your tubes should be cleared although how long this takes varies from man to man. There’s still a risk of pregnancy during this time.
About 12 weeks after the procedure, you’ll provide us a sample of your semen, which will be tested for sperm. Once tests confirm your semen is sperm-free, the Vasectomy is considered successful and you can stop using additional contraception for pregnancy prevention.
Please note that a Vasectomy will not provide protection against sexually transmitted infections or diseases, and safe sex practices should continue after the procedure is considered complete.
