Sporting injuries and other joint conditions can cause significant pain, swelling and debility. At Hale Health we are experts in ultrasound-guided joint injections for treating conditions such as osteoarthritis, tears in the cartilage of the hip, inflammation and swelling of tendons through injury or repetitive movements, muscle tears, calcium buildup in tendons, and nerve pressure or pain.

Direct delivery of medicines such as steroids, orthobiologic repairing injections, hyaluronic acid or pain relief can give speedy and effective benefits to painful, swollen joints. However the efficacy of joint injections is greatest when they are delivered at the optimum location in the joint, using ultrasound guidance.

Ultrasound uses harmless high-frequency sound waves which can ‘see’ through the skin without the need for potentially damaging radiation, such as in X-rays. Ultrasound allows the doctor to precisely identify and target the ideal location to deliver treatment within the joint, thus making best use of the medication and improving results for patients.

With ultrasound guidance the accuracy of nearly every joint injection exceeds 90% and approaches 100% in many. And the use of precise joint injections rather than orally-consumed medication can also help to aid recovery and minimise side-effects, as the quantity of medication required can be lower and thus can have less impact on the rest of the patient’s body.

"The use of ultrasound is a game-changer when it comes to treatment of painful joints. It removes the need for imprecise pain releaf through tablets or capsules, replacing it instead accurately targeting of the spots that will benefit most from treatment, and making a real difference in patient comfort and recovery time"

    Frequently Asked Questions

An ultrasound guided injection is considered a relatively safe procedure with minimal risk. Using ultrasound to guide the needle reduces the chances of causing damage to surrounding structures.

You might experience minor discomfort from the injection, but we can inject a local anaesthetic for deep injections or for injections to sensitive areas.

The local anaesthetic injected may give immediate pain relief and can last for up to 24 hours. The steroid can take several days to take effect and maximum effect from the injection can take up to 7-10 days

If we’ve injected a steroid, the effects of the injection in reducing pain and inflammation can last from a few weeks to a few months.

You don’t need a referral to be seen at Hale Health. Book an initial consultation with us and one of our clinicians can assess your condition and treatment needs.

You may be required to remain with our team under observation for 10 minutes after the procedure. We recommend you refrain from driving for the remainder of the day of your treatment, so bring someone who can drive you home. Please note your insurance may be void if you attempt to drive immediately after your procedure and are involved in an accident. You should rest the area that has been injected for 1-2 days.

It usually takes around 7 to 10 days before the full effect of the treatment can be felt although the pain should be significantly reduced within a week of the injection.

The initial numbness from the injection will usually wear off within a few hours. If you’ve had a local anaesthetic you may feel pain relief immediately after the injection.

After receiving any joint injection, we adivise you to refrain from vigorous exercise for approximately one week.

Ultrasound-guided injections usually give you a window of pain relief. This can last for a few months and help you progress with other treatment options like exercise therapy. However the duration of the effects varies depending on the specific condition being treated and individual factors.

On the vast majority of occasions, people have minimal levels of pain following the injection. However, we suggest that where possible you have a friend or family member drive you to the appointment or you attend via public transport.
