Skin tags are common but harmless small lesions that appear to hang off the skin, and which many people would prefer to have removed for aesthetic and/or comfort reasons.

Usually a skin tag will be between 1 and 5 millimetres in size, but they can also develop and grow over time, so a removal while the tag is still small can be advisable.

Skin tags can appear on most parts of the body, particularly those areas where there are natural folds and creases in the skin – this means that areas such as the eyelids, the neck and the armpits are particularly susceptible to developing the lesions.

At Hale Health, we can remove skin tags, warts and sun spots in one appointment using advanced cryotherapy  treatment. This treatment freezes the lesion using a cryopen device, allowing us to carefully and gently remove the lesion from the skin, leaving a smooth surface behind.

We also offer minor surgery (also known as our Lumps & Bumps clinic) to removal harder-to-treat skin tags, skin lesions, moles and warts. Our mole removal service can include mole biopsy via our lab to check for cancerous cells. Minor surgery may be the best treatment option and will be confirmed upon consultation.

Before any treatment, we will hold an initial consultation with you to explain the procedure, answer any questions you may have, though please also see our FAQs below) and discuss your possible treatment options.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Skin tag removal is a safe procedure with minimal risks. But as with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects, including infection, bleeding, and scarring.

Infection and bleeding are rare and can be minimised by following proper aftercare instructions, such as keeping the area clean and applying any prescribed medications. Scarring is also uncommon and typically minimal, especially when the removal is performed by an experienced surgeon. In rare cases, there may be a change in skin coloration or sensitivity at the site of removal.

Discussing your concerns and following aftercare guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of these side effects.

Our Medical Practitioners are highly skilled in skin tag removals and in use of short wave diathermy. The small needle that cauterises and coagulates skin tags through thermolysis is so fine it causes minimal or no discomfort.

Our electro-surgery Diathermy technique is a non-invasive procedure which gives instant results with minimal risk of leaving permanent scarring. That’s why it’s the best treatment option for the face. Speak with our clinician at your initial consultation about any concerns over scarring.

After removal with our electro-surgery method, a skin tag is very unlikely to grow back in the same area.

At Hale Health, we can remove skin tags in one appointment using advanced electro-surgery (or diathermy) treatment.

This treatment heats up the lesion using an electrical current administered by a needle, allowing us to gently remove the lesion from the skin’s surface. The procedure often will only take a few minutes to complete.

After the treatment the skin may be pink or puffy in more sensitive areas but this will settle in a few hours. A scab may form where the skin tag was removed. The full healing process takes 4 to 6 weeks after treatment.

After your skin tag is removed, we advise cleaning the area with soap and water to prevent any infection. We might also recommend application of topical medicated cream. Avoid touching or scratching the area treated and don’t pick at any scabs that might form.

Once a skin tag is completely removed, it does not grow back. But it’s possible for new skin tags to develop in the same area or in different parts of the body.

The propensity for skin tag formation can be attributed to factors such as genetics, friction, and certain medical conditions like diabetes or obesity.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and managing risk factors can help minimise the formation of new skin tags. Regular check-ups with your plastic surgeon can also help address any new growths promptly.
